BYX

Description

This example of my dark blue crystalline glaze, made in 2018, remained forgotten, hidden at the back of my display area, until recently. It predates my current stamp, instead having my handwritten mark on the bottom. The primary crystals are vivid blue with well-defined growth rings. The ground is a complex assortment of secondary crystals, unusual for the sheer variety of crystal types.

Macro Images

The secondary crystals of BYX are especially well developed. Macro shots such as these not only reveal the fascinating structure of the crystals, they are a powerful tool in studying the processes leading to their formation. Knowing the firing cycle, it is possible to determine the order in which they formed and the temperature range for growth. These are ordinary 1:1 macro shots made using a Canon 100mm f/2.8L lens on a full frame SLR. Each image is a focus stack of typically 30 inidviual frames cropped to 90% to elliminate edge artifacts such that each image represents an area on the piece of 32.2mm x 21.6mm.
