This is one of my favourite examples of aventurine in combination with zinc silicate. The aventurine has bled into the zinc silicate crystalline glaze creating a dynamic series of striations.
The carving on this lidded jar has created a powerful development of secondary crystals.
The combination of glazes on the lid has created a delicate pattern of pyroxene crystals – similar to a tea dust glaze.
An example of one of my manganese silicate glazes. This is a rare example with iron aventurine on the neck. The manganese glaze is lustrous with golden striations created by the flow of the aventurine. This is a very difficult piece to light and photograph.
This unusual glaze came about by putting the piece through the glaze firing cycle twice, the second time with a different crystalline glaze. The result is one of the best examples of secondary crystal development that I have achieved.
Combinations of glazes create exciting variations of colour and texture. C9Y (2019?) is one of my favourite examples. An iron aventurine glaze on the top has flowed over the zinc silicate creating a complex pattern of vertical striations that emphasise the form.
